Marbella

Marbella - Water absorbent beads for flooded areas, 2020

On April 2019, terrible things happened to my people. The flood washed over many small villages and cities in my country. The flood died down but unfortunately one day, when I was watching the news on TV, I saw the most grievous picture. I was so fazed. The floodwater was got into the streets of Khoram-Abad. Old houses were under the water. Poor people were standing on the rooftops of their houses in order to survive! The reporter on the helicopter, show them with his hand and screamed that they’re stuck on their rooftops! This scene really hurt my pride. As a designer, I had to find a way to save my people. At that sorrowful moment, I was looking for a simple, low cost & easy idea to not only block flood water from entering their houses but also use this huge water practically for my country. Flood, flooded fields, people on the rooftops and helicopter were keywords to solve this puzzle. 20 years ago when I was a child, my mother bought some small jelly beads from the grand bazaar. She told me that these are jelly soils. If you put them on the water they got bigger so that you can grow plants. I was so interested. For months, my hobby was to pour the water bowl with these little jelly balls until they absorbed all the water. That was captivating for me because the water could turn into the thing that I could play with it. That always stayed in my mind. Yes, I found the solution. That water bowl and jelly soils are the key answers. With drones or helicopters, It's so simple to release these jelly beans with appropriate dimensions into the flooded areas to reduce the flood water. So people will be saved! Also, this portable water will be used for agricultural production in drought areas. I called it Marbella.
